To use an old saw, "If you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door" – Is simply not true. There may well be lots of people looking for mousetraps, and your door may well be open – but unless the world knows about it – they’re not about to beat a path anywhere…let alone to your door.

People find websites for one of four reasons:

  1. Advertising
  2. Guessing the name of the site 
    (no prizes for guessing what IBM’s website address is)
  3. Referrals
  4. Search Engines

If you have a Coca-Cola budget, then you can advertise. If you have already built a brand, then you are already advertising. If you have many visitors already…and a referral mechanism – you’re laughing.

But for the 'tiny' few of us who do not have the large marketing budget, the team of ever ready bunnies sitting on the sidelines, nor a large number of ‘enthusiastic boosters’ - Search engines are where it’s at.

Search engines are accessible by 100% of internet users, and – when researching specific purchases or interests – 80% or more use the top guns, namely. Google, Alta Vista, MSN search, Yahoo, etc..

Plain and simple. If your website doesn’t do well on these websites, you won’t do well on the internet. Search engine positioning is not ‘cheating’, it’s simply making a website that is appealing to both human visitors and computer visitors (spiders).

Search engine positioning is not just stuffing meaningless words into hidden text, it's a gentle art that begins with using the proper tools.
